Definition
Accredited ISO 27001 certification bodies are independent third-party organisations that audit your Information Security Management System and issue official certificates. To be accredited, these auditing firms are rigorously evaluated and approved by a government backed national authority, such as UKAS.
They are the companies you pay to check your homework. If they are not accredited, your enterprise clients will not accept your certificate.

Accreditation Bodies vs Certification Bodies
You must understand the hierarchy of the compliance industry. It operates on a strict system of oversight.
- Accreditation Bodies: The national authorities like UKAS in the UK or ANAB in the US. They are governed by ISO 17011. They are the authoritative entities that audit the auditors.
- Certification Bodies: Commercial firms like BSI, SGS, or A-lign. They are governed by ISO 17021-1 and ISO 27006. They are the independent companies that audit your startup.
Why Tech Startups Must Use Them
Early stage tech and AI businesses often look for the cheapest route to compliance. This leads them to unaccredited certificate mills. A certificate from an unaccredited body has zero commercial weight. When you submit it to an enterprise procurement team, they will reject it, and you will lose the contract.
An accredited ISO 27001 certification body guarantees that your audit was impartial, rigorous, and meets international standards recognised globally by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).
The Shared Resource Warning
When selecting an accredited body, be wary of the shared resource model. Many certification bodies do not employ their own auditors. Instead, they use a shared pool of freelance contractors. You end up getting the exact same auditor regardless of which body you choose, but paying drastically different prices. Always ask if they use full-time employed staff or third-party contractors before you sign a contract.
